[Korean Culture - Travel] Maisan Horse Ear Mountain & Jeonju Hanok Village: Complete Travel Guide for Foreign Visitors 2026
Welcome back to KwaveDragon! π
Today, we're taking you to one of Korea's most mysterious and breathtaking destinations — Maisan (λ§μ΄μ°), the Horse Ear Mountain of Jeollabuk-do.
Two massive rocky peaks rise from the earth like the ears of a giant horse. This isn't just a mountain. It's a place where nature, history, and a touch of the supernatural come together in a way you won't find anywhere else on earth. And the best part? π️ Step 4 — Maisan (λ§μ΄μ°) — Korea's Most Mysterious Mountain
Why is Maisan so special?
Maisan means "Horse Ear Mountain (馬θ³ε±±)" — named for its two rocky peaks that jut into the sky like giant horse ears. Located in Jinan County, Jeollabuk-do, the mountain stands 686m tall and has been considered sacred by Koreans for centuries.
What makes it truly extraordinary is the change of seasons. In spring, cherry blossoms and fresh green leaves frame the twin peaks. In winter, reverse icicles — called yeokgodeum (μκ³ λλ¦) — grow upward from the ground like frozen fountains, a natural phenomenon found almost nowhere else on earth.
The Stone Towers of Tapsa Temple — 100 Years of Mystery
At the foot of Maisan stands Tapsa Temple (νμ¬) — home to over 80 stone towers built entirely by one man, Yi Gap-ryong, in the early 1900s. He stacked them by hand, without any mortar or machinery. Remarkably, not a single tower has collapsed in over 100 years — even through earthquakes and typhoons. Scientists still can't fully explain it. Every visitor who sees them for the first time says the same thing: "I can't believe it's real."

π½️ Step 5 — What to Eat — Sanchae Bibimbap & Deodeok Gui at Chogajungdam
After exploring Maisan, you deserve a meal that matches the mountains — and nothing does that better than Sanchae Bibimbap (μ°μ±λΉλΉλ°₯).
Sanchae Bibimbap is a Korean rice bowl mixed with wild mountain greens — fernbrake, bellflower root, seasoned spinach, fresh bracken, and more — all foraged directly from the surrounding hills. Add a spoonful of gochujang (red pepper paste), mix it all together, and take a bite. It's earthy, fresh, vibrant, and unlike any bibimbap you've had in the city. Koreans travel hours just for this taste every spring.
Alongside it, don't miss Deodeok Gui (λλꡬμ΄) — grilled Korean wild root (deodeok) pounded flat, brushed with a sweet and spicy gochujang glaze, and grilled over fire. The unique herbal aroma mixed with the smoky char is addictive. First-timers always say: "I could eat this every single day."
π Chogajungdam (μ΄κ°μ λ΄)
A beloved local restaurant at the foot of Maisan, serving mountain cuisine since the 1990s. Only seasonal wild greens sourced directly from local farms and nearby hillsides are used. Located within walking distance from Tapsa Temple — perfect timing for lunch after your hike.
